Meet Markus Frind and PlentyofFish.com, the new entrepreneurial poster boy. A few years ago he built a no frills dating website by himself and now the site gets more page views then Match.com. He did it all by keeping it simple and keeping it free. This, my friends, is the new online economy. All the big websites and corporations keep trying to use old models on the web and yet they are consistently getting beat by the little guy. News Flash: People Like Free Shit! Viva la Rev!
The idea had initially come to Frind in 2001, when he started checking out Canada’s then-largest dating site, Lavalife, hoping to meet women or at least to kill some time. Online dating seemed like a good idea, but he was startled to discover that the site charged users hefty fees. “I thought it was ridiculous,” he says. “It was this rinky-dink little site charging money for something anyone could make. I was like, I can beat these guys.”
And there is a quality follow up discussion at TuckerMax.com, Markus even joins in!
